Als er ins Nachbarhaus geht und die Leichen von Jud und Rachel vorfindet, tötet er Gage, indem er ihn mit der zweiten Spritze niedersticht. Anschliessend brennt Louis das Nachbarhaus nieder. Er glaubt, dass sein Sohn nur böse wurde, weil er zu lange nach seinem Tod auf dem Felsplateau begraben wurde. Weil seine Frau erst vor kurzem gestorben war, beerdigt er sie auf dem Felsplateau. Der Roman endet mit Rachels Rückkehr.
